This collection didn’t start out as a predetermined list of animals. As I picked up each piece of paper, I decided which animal would inhabit it. Each drawing influenced the next until a natural theme began to show itself. I work with subjects that are familiar to me, rather than exotic. Familiarity is, and always has been, comforting. It rarely leaves you questioning, like so many abstract pieces, and delivers a feeling that is not only direct, but also easily shared.
Although it didn't start out that way, FAMILIARS ended up being an exercise in introspection. These 32 pieces are facets of myself - they are witchy, sentimental, wild, and personal. Each piece exists as part of a totem, containing something uniquely individual and simultaneously universal. I hope you see yourself in these as much as I see myself.
